Bishop Frank J. Beard and members of the Illinois Great Rivers Conference Extended Cabinet have lifted the suspension of in-person worship in our area of the Conference. Our church may hold public worship with the following restrictions. For regular worship services, people may gather in the public worship space for up to 25% of its capacity. For us, this means that up to 56 people may gather in public worship. The church office is also allowed to open again. All other groups may meet at the church as long as social distancing and face masks are used. Hopefully, all restriction will be lifted in the near future.

Our church has sponsored the “Book Nook” at King Park. If you would be interested in helping to keep it clean and books rotated please contact Karen Laflin.

Thanks to everyone who donated to the new copier. Your donations and Memorial Committee funds have paid for the new copier. Thanks!

Next Sunday, January 31st, Rod Prentice will be speaking at both services.

Prelude

Hymn: 577 “God of Grace and God of Glory”
1 God of grace and God of glory, on the people pour thy power; crown thine ancient church's story, bring her bud to glorious flower. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
for the facing of this hour, for the facing of this hour.
2 Lo! the hosts of evil round us scorn thy Christ, assail his ways! Fears and doubts too long have bound us; free our hearts to work and praise. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the living of these days, for the living of these days.
3 Cure thy children's warring madness, bend our pride to thy control; shame our wanton, selfish gladness, rich in things and poor in soul. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
lest we miss thy kingdom's goal, lest we miss thy kingdom's goal.
4 Save us from weak resignation to the evils we deplore; let the search for thy salvation
be our glory evermore. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, serving thee whom we adore,
serving thee whom we adore.

Call to Worship/Opening Prayer (AWA)
For God alone our souls wait in silence.
In God alone do our spirits find peace.
For God alone is our rock and our salvation.
In God alone does our faith remain unshaken.
Pour out your hearts before God.
For God is our refuge and our strength.
Put your trust in God.
God’s steadfast love endures forever.
Let us pray….
Teach us anew, rock of our salvation, how your kingdom has come near.
As you called Simon and Andrew long ago, call us to be your disciples this day,
that we might find refuge and strength as we face the destructive forces of our lives. Grant us the strength to wait for you in silence, that we might meet you in the subterranean chambers of our souls. For in you we rest secure, in you we abide in holy love. Amen.

Hymn: 2016 “Glorify Thy Name”
1. Father, we love You, we worship and adore you, glorify your name in all the earth, Glorify your name, Glorify your name, Glorify your name in all the earth
2. Jesus, we love You, we worship and adore you, glorify your name in all the earth, Glorify your name, Glorify your name, Glorify your name in all the earth
3. Spirit, we love You, we worship and adore you, glorify your name in all the earth, Glorify your name, Glorify your name, Glorify your name in all the earth

Prayers of The People:

Scripture Lesson: Psalm 32:1-5 (NIV)
1 Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
2 Blessed is the one whose sin the LORD does not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit. 3 When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long.
4 For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. 5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin.

I John 1:5-10 ( NIV)
5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

The Word of God for the people of God.
Thanks be to God, Amen

Sermon: “Admitting Responsibility For Our Sins”

Sacrament of Holy Communion Page 7 (Apostles’ Creed)
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Pages 12 – 15 Word and Service Table II
Prayer of Confession:
God of all nations, we praise you that in Christ the barriers that have separated humanity are torn down. Yet we confess our slowness to open our hearts and minds to those of other lands, tongues, and races. Deliver us from the sins of fear and prejudice, that we may move toward the day when all are truly one in Jesus Christ. Amen.

Hymn; 377 “It Is Well With My Soul”
1. When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll; whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul.
Refrain:
It is well with my soul, it is well, it is well with my soul.
2. Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, let this blest assurance control,
that Christ has regarded my helpless estate, and hath shed his own blood for my soul.

Refrain:
It is well with my soul, it is well, it is well with my soul.
3. My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought! My sin, not in part but the whole, is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

Refrain:
It is well with my soul, it is well, it is well with my soul.
4. And, Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight, the clouds be rolled back as a scroll; the trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend, even so, it is well with my soul.

Refrain:
It is well with my soul, it is well, it is well with my soul.

Prelude

Hymn: 64 “Holy, Holy, Holy”
1. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity!
2. Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.
3. Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee, though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see, only thou art holy; there is none beside thee, perfect in power, in love and purity.
4. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea. Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity.

Call to Worship/Opening Prayer (AWA)
Who is calling us?
Come and see.
What might happen?
Come and see.
Jesus calls to us, “Follow me.”
We follow the one who calls us.
Let us pray….
Creating God, how deeply you know us.
In the mystery of your love,
you see who we are and who we might become.
Our bodies are your creation;
they are wonderfully made.
Our minds reflect your handiwork.
Our spirits are a gift from you.
You call us by name and invite us to follow.
Lead us now into the depths of your love. Amen.

Hymn: 496 “Sweet Hour Of Prayer”
1. Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer! that calls me from a world of care,
and bids me at my Father's throne make all my wants and wishes known. In seasons of distress and grief, my soul has often found relief, and oft escaped the tempter's snare
by thy return, sweet hour of prayer!
2. Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer! the joys I feel, the bliss I share of those whose anxious spirits burn with strong desires for thy return! With such I hasten to the place where God my Savior shows his face, and gladly take my station there, and wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!
3. Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer! thy wings shall my petition bear to him whose truth and faithfulness engage the waiting soul to bless. And since he bids me seek his face, believe his word, and trust his grace, I'll cast on him my every care, and wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

Prayers of The People:

Scripture Lesson: Luke 15: 17-24 (NIV)
17 “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ 20 So he got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. 21 “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.

II Corinthians 5:18-21 ( NIV)
18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

The Word of God for the people of God.
Thanks be to God, Amen

near to the heart of God.

Pittsfield United Methodist Church

Good morning, everyone. I am sharing the following post from Bishop Beard and the Cabinet. It means that public worship will resume this Sunday, January 17th. There will be a 9 a.m. and an 11 a.m. service. See you at church.

"Bishop Frank J. Beard and members of the Illinois Great Rivers Conference Extended Cabinet are announcing today the lifting of suspension of in-person worship in churches and moving back to regional mitigation based upon four metrics:
· Test positivity rate of less than 12 percent, based upon a 7-day rolling average
· Hospital bed availability of more than 20 percent in Intensive Care Units, based upon a 3-day rolling average
· Hospital medical and surgical bed availability of more than 20 percent, based upon a 3-day rolling average
· A decrease in Covid-19 patients in the hospital, based upon a 7-day rolling average
As a result, based upon today’s metrics in these four areas, Regions 2, 3 and 7 will move from Tier 3 mitigations to Tier 2 effective immediately. Regions 4, 5 and 6 remain in Tier 3 mitigations until the metrics meet guidelines outlined in the IGRC Pressing On document found at: www.igrc.org/coronavirus
For those moving to Tier 2:
• For regular worship gatherings, churches are strongly recommended but not required to limit their gatherings to 25 people or 25% of the room capacity, whichever is smaller
• For all other gatherings, including funerals and weddings, gatherings should be limited to 10 people or less
• Church buildings can open with staff working the offices
• In all situations, masks are required without a doctor’s certification that the person is exempt and social distancing of 6 feet or more should be observed.
For those remaining in Tier 3:
For the good of the congregation and community, churches are very strongly recommended not to hold in-person worship gatherings indoors or outdoors
• Churches may gather for Drive In worship services in groups of any size with proper distancing (See guidelines in this document for details)
• Church buildings should close, and staff should work from home, except for essential and minimum basic operations that need to be conducted in the building
Information on the four metrics per region may be obtained by visiting: dph.illinois.gov/regionmetrics Because the metrics are fluid, it is possible that a region that moves from one level of mitigation, may return to that stricter mitigations if regions begin showing figures that no longer meet the metrics. These metrics are updated daily and it is advised to check them regularly for the latest information.
Bishop Beard announced Nov. 17 the suspension of all in-person worship through Dec. 13, in an effort to mitigate a pandemic surge. On Dec. 9, Bishop Beard extended the suspension indefinitely.
Current metrics by region as of Tuesday, Jan. 12 are as follows:
Region 2 – Moves to Tier 2 mitigation
• 11 consecutive days of positivity rates below 12 percent – MEETS GUIDELINE
